Acne, usually known as pimples, is a very common problem these days but, its chronic course has a big impact on the psycho-social wellbeing of a person.
It’s an inflammatory disorder of the pilosebaceous gland (oil glands). Over activity of the gland leading to excessive production of sebum (oil) and superadded infection with a bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes), are the most important causes. However, other factors like hormonal imbalance, stress, excess intake of oily food, less intake of water, regular application of cosmetics, creamy facials and steroids, do play a very important role. The condition is seen in both sexes. Though, it usually starts in adolescence (between the ages of 14 and 19) and continue till adulthood, but sometimes it may appear first time at the age of 25 (late onset acne) and progresses till forties.
Acne commonly occurs on the face but upper back and chest can also be involved in some cases. It is characterized by blackheads, whiteheads, reddish or pus filled lesions and may lead to pigmentation or scarring. The resulting appearance may lead to anxiety, reduced self-esteem, and in extreme cases, depression. Self medication should be avoided and early and prompt treatment is advocated to prevent complications. Since it’s a long term problem, the treatment requires patient’s patience commitment and dedication. Lifestyle modification like regular exercise, yoga, less intake of oily food and carbohydrats (sugars) and more intake of water and vitamin A rich foods (carrots), play important role along with medication from an expert.
